Panning for Gold in the Scottish Highlands!

Did you know!

That you can pan for gold in the UK while protecting the environment?!

Jacqueline & Edward is an ethical jewellery company based in the UK specialising in hand-crafted engagement and wedding rings, founded by geologist Mark Bell.

Each piece is made with recycled materials and incorporates gold panned from rivers mainly in the UK and Europe.

Couples can choose which region they’d like their gold from – and – perhaps the most exciting bit – you can pan for gold yourself!!!

I was lucky enough to experience this myself in Scotland – a place very dear to my heart – back in 2022:

September 2nd 2022 - The day before panning.

A road-trip to the Scottish Highlands with my friend from Bristol (where I lived at the time).

Several stops made along the way (I’m slightly obsessed with service stations).

We arrive 9 hours later. Knackered. Obligatory Irn Bru.

Tucked up in a little bunker nestled between Loch Doine and Loch Voil.

September 3rd 2022 – Panning day!

Green Welly Stop, Tyndrum, 9:30am.

We’re greeted by Dr. Philour panning teacher for the day.

He drives us in his VW Transporter about 15 minutes through the stunning emerald green and ochre Highlands to a woodland enclave where we’re asked to put on some wetproofs and wellies!

All geared up, we trail (trudge behind) Dr Phil, following-the-leader style through fern-lined marshlands along a rocky river –

think Frodo and Samwise Gamgee on their mission to Mordor…

30 mins later, we arrive – slightly sweaty and slightly muddy – at our location – scouted out by Dr Phil as a prime spot for gold.

Pans at the ready!

We pan…

We pan some more…

My inner Golum appears…

I wants it…

More panning…

Gold! Oh wait, nope…alas, it’s glass.

Pan harder.

Pan harder still…

My precious!

The tiniest specks, but I’m beside myself!

My very own new found gold,

A piece of Scotland,

To have and to hold.
